I Love My Imperfect Home!

1/22/2014

My home doesn't remotely resemble the kind of homes featured in 'House Beautiful' magazine.  That used to bother me.  I so wanted my spaces to be picture perfect -- clutter (and dust) free and every stylishly coordinated thing in its perfect little place.  Dream on, sister!  I mean really, who was I kidding?  I only lift a dust rag before I host a party (which is rarely) and there isn't a single surface in my home without  something on it that doesn't belong there.  I admit it, I'm a lazy housekeeper.  I will always choose leisure and fun over chores.  I can dream all I want about having a picture perfect home but, the reality is I'll never have one.  It's just not compatible with the person I am.

I've learned to embrace my slacker ways.  I mean, I'm not living in complete filth.  I vacuum once in a while and the dishes eventually get washed and put away.  The Board of Health won't be paying me any visits and you won't see me on an episode of 'Hoarders.'  Every day life can be chock full:  get up, make lunch, feed the dogs, walk the dogs, catch up on the news, do a load of laundry, shower and get ready for work, drive to work, WORK, pick up something to make for dinner, drive home, walk the dogs, make dinner, feed the dogs, eat dinner, minimally clean up after dinner...  Before you know it, it's 9:00 at night and your options are: clean, or fall asleep on the couch watching 'Big Bang Theory?'  You guessed it, 'Big Bang Theory' wins every time.  The point I'm trying to make is that your house should be a reflection of yourself.  I'm not a natural born clean freak.  I'm a natural born nature freak, a quasi artist, disorganized and for as long as I can remember, I fly by the seat of my pants.  My home reflects that and I no longer apologize for it.  I love it, and I love my home.

My favorite spot in my home is my sofa with blankets, magazines and a beverage.
Obviously, I'm of the the belief that everyone's home should be a reflection of its occupants.  Don't think twice about displaying the things you love.  If it sings to you, let it sing where you can enjoy it.  There's a quote by William Morris that I adore:  "“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”  My things are just that, beautiful in my eyes and/or useful, and I'm grateful for all my things because they were chosen with care or given to me with love.  As for the dust bunnies (elephants is more like it), the mountain of clothes on top of my dresser and the crud on the kitchen faucet, well, I don't necessarily love all that but, it comes with the territory of my personality.

Here are a few more home-related quotes that I found on the 'Country Living Magazine' Pinterest page that I can relate to and maybe you can, too.
